As the adage goes, "The show must go on." That is, until COVID-19 stuck early in the year 2020. Most governments around the world reacted to the pandemic with a lockdown of all non-essential activities. Live music was one of the first things to go away and likely, I fear, the last to return (if ever).
No other world event has had such an effect on live music. We've made it through recessions, wars and terrorist attacks but nothing slammed the door so quickly and totally as this pandemic.
I've performed in bands as a weekend warrior nearly uninterrupted the past 40 years. Music has always just been a fun hobby for me and yet I can't imagine going much longer without playing a live gig. But for millions of other musicians whose only means of income is playing music, the lockdown is a catastrophe. Their careers are literally disintegrating.
I tend to be the anxious type so I cannot imagine what full-time musicians are going through right now. Most are doing anything they can to make money whether it's on-line teaching or posting videos to increase their social media traffic. Some are so desperate, they've even opened accounts asking for direct contributions. I'm not talking about big name, famous musicians. I'm talking about musicians that slug it out in clubs, restaurants and small venues or freelance musicians who play behind the big name stars. I've made contributions where and when I can. Perhaps others can do the same. I recognize the dedication it takes for great musicians to learn and perfect their art. I also recognize how much enjoyment they bring to others.
When and if things get back to "normal", please make an effort to support live music and venues that feature it.
After all, the show must go on.
